Aishwarya Rai was born on 1 Nov 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. Aishwarya started modeling at a young age. She initially considered a career in medicine as zoology was her favourite subject and later, she was enrolled at Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture with the plan of becoming an architect. Later gave up her education to pursue a career in modelling
In 1994, she participated in the Miss India beauty contest and became the first runner-up. The same year, she won the title of Miss World that was held in South Africa. Rai continued to pursue a career as a model until she became an actress.
She made her acting debut in 1997 with the Mani Ratnams Tamil movie Iruvar, a semi-biographical political drama.
In the same year, she made her Bollywood debut with the Rahul Rawails film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. In 1999, Rai starred in the romantic drama Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which became a significant turning point in her career. Aishwarya acted in numerous Bollywood hit films like Taal (1999), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Mohabbatein (2000), Devdas (2002), Dhoom 2 (2006), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Guzaarish (2010) and many more. She has gained many national and international honours, recognitions including Padma Shri (2009), Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2012).
